Privacy Tip

Question:

What are some “tips” for disclosing my SSN?

It seems schools, phone companies, utilities, health clubs, insurance companies, video stores -- just about everybody wants my Social Security Number (SSN).

Answer:

Generally, any business can ask for your SSN; however there are very few entities that can actually request it. For example, motor vehicle departments, tax departments and welfare departments. In addition, your SSN is required for transactions involving taxes, banks, brokerages, employers, and the like also have a legitimate need for your SSN. Here are some tips you can use to protect and minimize the use of your SSN:
  • Before you reveal any personally identifying information, find out how it will be used and whether it will be shared with others. Ask about company's privacy policy: Will you have a choice about the use of your information; can you choose to have it kept confidential?
  • Ask if the business accepts alternative identification. If they don't, you can refuse to do business with them. Remember - there's a possibility they'll refuse to provide whatever product or service you're seeking.
  • If possible, don't give it over the phone.
  • When you discard receipts, copies of credit applications, insurance forms, physician statements, bank checks and statements, expired credit cards, credit offers you get in the mail and mailing labels from magazines, tear or shred them.
